Key West travel tips that actually help
The practical questions every first-time visitor asks, answered honestly.
Best time to visit Key West
December through April for dry, warm weather and the best events. Late April to May is a sweet spot with thinner crowds and lower hotel prices.
How many days to stay
Three days is enough for the essentials. Four to five lets you add a Dry Tortugas day trip or a slower beach day without feeling rushed.
Getting around
Walk Old Town, rent a bike or scooter for the rest, or hop on the Duval Loop trolley. Most visitors won't need a rental car for a short trip.
Parking
It's tight and expensive in Old Town. If you do drive, look for hotels with included parking, or use the Park 'N Ride garage at the edge of the historic district.
Weather
Hot and humid year-round. Afternoon showers in summer pass quickly. Bring a light layer for the evening boat trips.
Hurricane season
Officially June through November, with peak risk in September and October. Travel insurance is worth considering during these months.
Costs and budgeting
Key West is pricier than mainland Florida. Budget around $250 to $400 a night for hotels in season, plus $80 to $200 per person per day for tours and food.
What to pack
Reef-safe sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, light layers for the evening, comfortable walking shoes, and one nicer outfit for dinner on Duval.
Do you need a car
If you're flying in and staying in Old Town, no. If you're road-tripping the Keys or planning multiple beach days outside Old Town, yes.
